Trying Something… Unusual!
Today, my band teacher announced that we’d be doing something we’d all been waiting for - having a jazz band rehearsal!! Jazz band is only for students who made the cut, so most of us are first, second, and third chair players (I’m a first chair). Having jazz band also meant that I had to do something considered a little strange at my school - play the baritone saxophone. I’d never played it before, and it looked… big. I mean come on! See what it looks like compared to the alto saxophone, what I’m used to playing?
So it was kind of scary, because it weighed a million pounds and I felt like it was going to just drag me down to the floor or something. It’s so big, you have to wear a harness to play it. When I took the harness out of the case, it didn’t look that hard to put on. Yeah right. It took a minute to figure it out, and it was designed for… big people. That took some adjusting.
But, in the end, I loved playing it! It was different then the alto - and I liked the sound of it. As I stated in my last post, I like being weird and different, and playing the barry sax is definitely different!
Have you ever done anything really different?

Well, I’ve written a novel. And I have shiny purple finger nails right now, and rainbow shoelaces on my high tops. (They’re black, but I want to get a pair with a composition notebook pattern for Christmas.) But, other than that… well, I read my Bible a lot, and I guess that’s different. But goos different. Yay for different people! ![]()

Oo, jazz band. My school has a jazz band as well, and I play tenor in it.
I don’t think I could ever play the bari sax though. It just looks so… enormous? I love the tone of a good bari player.
Have fun with it!
Hm, the only thing that I’ve done that was really different was play the bass clarinet for like… a week. I quit because I was too young and I didn’t have enough air in me to play loudly. I mean, back then, the bass clarinet was taller then I was!

The bari sax is insane! It loops round and round and round and round… I much prefer the tenor, although I don’t actually own one. Mine’s a lovely little alto. The tenor has a much more mellow sound and sounds much nicer when you’re playing jazz. It also hits lower notes than the alto (which goes only a semitone lower than my clarinet).
