About Snow Daze
Picture this: a Freewebs PageBuilder layout with an enter page, cliche content, and a horrible name. What do you think? Ick. Yes, this is the very description of Girls on Web, the original Snow Daze, the very site that Snow Daze once was, long, long ago. If you want to be metaphoric about it, it’s like a super nerd, dressed in the stereotypical suit and tie, with glasses, braces and headgear, finally noticing how unpopular they were, and becoming the more popular, social person. Yes, that’s Girls on Web! I finally noticed that Girls on Web was horrible, and strived to create a site that people actually liked, and that got at least average reviews from critics. Thus, on February 14, 2007, after a 3 month hiatus, Snow Daze was created.
Actually, it was called An Online Snow Day. But after a while, I shortened it to Snow Daze, and the logo became “An online snow day.” It was another Freewebs site, and the first layout was… bad. It was my first HTML layout, created messily with tables and a “pixely” header. Ugh… the horror… Soon, I changed the layout to a bright blue layout. Better, but a little too bright. Then, during the time of that layout, a lot of people told me that you couldn’t see the text in FF. It was because I didn’t specify the font size, color, etc. in the coding. I went on a 3 month hiatus and re-wrote all of the HTML coding for my site.
When I returned, my layout was a reddish color, with the header being rainbow swirls. I’d successfully fixed the problem, but ran into another. Freewebs was starting to annoy me. My website URL being http://www.freewebs.com/anonlinesnowday, my site seemed very unprofessional, and Freewebs was very slow, and didn’t work a lot of the time. So began my search for a new host…
I had been searching and searching when I stumbled across Lily’s host - Dont-Talk. I looked at the site, and it seemed great, except I couldn’t read the rules for hosting. My computer blocked the page (it blocks EVERYTHING). So I asked Lily to email them to me. It blocked her email. I was sad, because I really wanted to have this be my host. Soon after this incident, I went on vacation to Kiawah Island, SC. My aunt brought her computer there, and it didn’t have blocks (!) so I could look at the rules. I applied, and got accepted!
Great, I had a new host, and a new layout. The layout was one of my better ones, although still not great and not CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) based. But, I was happy with it for the time being. I’d had my Dont-Talk website for only a few months when Ellen Ann (the site’s webmaster) announced that she couldn’t keep Dont-Talk and was shutting it down. So, once again, I began a search for a new host.
Clem had suggested on my tagboard to get hosted at Kyai.net, her host. I checked it out, and it looked like a good host, so I applied. The next day, I got an email back saying that I wasn’t accepted. I wasn’t upset, but I felt that I needed to know why I wasn’t accepted, so I replied back, asking. Ren, the webmaster, sent a very nice, thoughtful email full of criticism for my site. It stated that the main problems were that I needed a subdomain - reserved for great sites - and my layout was, um… not good. I was thankful for this criticism, as I wanted, and still want, to make my site the best it can be. But, I still didn’t have a host, and my Dont-Talk site would be expiring soon. Then, I remembered Mari’s host was Rachael, from Calm Banana. Mari had stated that she like Rachael’s hosting a lot, so I applied there. Rachael accepted me, and was very nice in helping me along to make this site. THANK YOU RACHAEL!! ![]()
