American Idol: Cruel or Harmless?

For those of you who don’t watch American Idol, it’s a show that is basically a singing contest. People compete to be “the next American Idol” and get voted off by us viewers each week. Right now, the auditions are going on.

That’s the thing - the auditions. Before the people who are trying out get to be on TV, they have to be listened to by some random people who put them through. These people put the good and the bad through, for TV purposes. But when the bad singers get on TV, the judges laugh in their face and totally destroy them. And, while it’s funny, you can’t help but feel bad for them because they really think that they’re good and they’re being completely embarrassed in front of the entire world. Also, you know that some of the people who audition are mentally ill, and for the judges to completely destroy them is pretty cruel to me.

So I think that the auditions are both funny, and cruel. But they’re pretty much only funny if the person is dressed in costume, or really think they’re good and they’re AWFUL. What do you think?

I don’t think it’s cruel at all. These people are putting themselves out there, and they should know that they might get criticised. If they can’t deal, well, too bad for them. Maybe by next year they’ll mature.
However, I do think that some of the comments are cruel, i.e. the ones about their physical appearances, which they can’t help. Simon is the only good judge, in my opinion, but sometimes he says really mean things about how people look. (One of the times it was to Mandisa, who turned out to be one of the best singers they’ve ever had on the show!)
But other than that, I don’t really see how it’s cruel.
As for the people who are mentally unstable, well, what you’re saying isn’t really true. The judges try to let them down gently, even Simon.

I used to really like American Idol. Now I’m a little interested, but I mostly think that it can be cruel. Besides, I read somewhere the audition process isn’t even real. The producers see everyone first, and only a fraction can move on to Simon, Paula and Randy. They pick lots of bad people on purpose so that we can be entertained. Isn’t that a little cruel?
I also think that lots of comments are totally uncalled for. One time I think there was a woman who had a great voice but was a little overweight (not even that much). Once she left the room after being admitted to Hollywood, Simon said “I think we need a bigger stage this year,”. How totally uncalled for is that?
